Introduction
The Motorola MTM800 offers advanced capabilities and enhanced functionality compared to the MTM700, making it the superior choice. Generally, the MTM700 is good for use in the amateur radio band, though it has a lower firmware version.
For amateur radio needs, this likely has no significant consequences. After every FW upgrade, the radio retains its amateur radio codeplug, but the CPS performs a sanity check on the data and rejects all frequencies above 430 MHz.
Motorola MTM800 Sales Model Nomenclature
This nomenclature includes information about the product’s features, specifications, and intended use, and helps both the manufacturer and customers to distinguish between different versions or configurations of the product.
Motorola TETRA radios are available with various firmware versions, each featuring one of the following standard AIE TETRA Encryption Algorithms (TEAs):
– CLEAR NonE2 (No Encryption) This is the only one for HamRadio use!
– TEA1 is for commercial use and is primarily used by critical infrastructure around the world. But it’s also used by some police and military agencies outside of Europe.
– TEA2 (restricted to use by Schengen / EU countries). Possession of TEA2 radios is in many countries
prohibited by law!
– TEA3 Essentially the export version of TEA2 which is for use outside of Europe by the same kinds of entities that use radios with TEA2.
– TEA4 For commercial use but is hardly used.
In 2022 ETSI introduced additional algorithms, TEA 5, TEA 6 and TEA7, in order to future-proof the technology against quantum attacks. The entire set of these original and additional algorithms will be made available in the public domain as well as TAA1 (the original authentication and key management specification) and TAA2 (the new authentication and key management specification).
Each TEA version builds upon the previous one, incorporating enhancements to meet evolving user needs and address emerging challenges in communication security and efficiency.
Frequency Range from Factory:
The Motorola MTM800 series includes several models, also serveral HW revisions, each designed to operate within specific frequency ranges. Below is a list of some common models and their corresponding frequency ranges:
Model Number – MTM800 (MT912M) MTPNN5TAN Frequency Range: 380-430 MHz
Model Number – MTM800 (MT512M) MTPUN5TAN Frequency Range: 410-470 MHz Ham band covered no need expanding
Model Number – MTM800 (MT712M) MTPVN5TAN Frequency Range: 806-870 MHz
Model Number – MTM800 (MT912M) FuG MTPAN5TAN Frequency Range: 380-430 MHz (FuG version, typically used in Germany for public safety)
Expanded Frequency Range:
Model Number – MTM800 (MT912M) MTPNN5TAN Frequency Range: 380-440 MHz
Model Number – MTM800 (MT512M) MTPUN5TAN Frequency Range: 410-470 MHz Ham band covered no need expanding
Model Number – MTM800 (MT712M) MTPVN5TAN Frequency Range: 806-870 MHz N/A
Model Number – MTM800 (MT912M) FuG MTPAN5TAN Frequency Range: 380-440 MHz
Adaptation for Ham Radio Use
The Motorola MTM800 was one of the first Tetra radios adapted for Ham radio use. However, being one of the oldest models, it’s important to note that due to the limitations of its firmware features and programming, it is not recommended for daily use. It may be suitable for gateway builds like SVXLink with some modifications.
Attention! Due to the nature of the radio market, some units may originate from governmental working environments, still in use, stolen, lost, or intended for destruction but salvaged by individuals. If you notice any signs such as radio logos, initial messages, back labels, or additional markings indicating that the radio might be a “tea 2” or not a “clean radio,” do not purchase it. Instead, return the radio to the seller or report it to the nearest police station.
Only Clear radio firmware can be used for HamTetra use!!
Programming
To program the Motorola MTM800, you will need a compatible programming cable and Motorola Tetra CPS or Motorola Tetra CPS Depot software. Additionally, for firmware upgrades, depend of existing radio firmware you need the right Z.19 file. Motorola MTM700 firmware can be upgraded through Motorola Tetra CPS or Motorola Tetra CPS Depot software.
The programming Active Data Cable, “GMKN1022”, is only compatible when an Expansion Head is not fitted as part of a remote mount configuration. In this configuration access to the Tetra PEI for IP Packet Data and SDS services is available on the Expansion head and the Active Data Cable GMKN1022 is not required.
Here is an example of how to understand Motorola MTM800 firmware files. In this specific case, firmware R020003317:
– R02: Indicates Motorola MTM800 firmware
– 000: Signifies ‘clear’ firmware, meaning it lacks TEA encryption
– 3317: Represents the actual firmware version numbe

Programming Cable
Programming the Motorola MTM800 is a straightforward process thanks to the availability of dedicated programming cable. This cable facilitate seamless communication between the radio and programming software, allowing users to customize settings, configure channels, and update firmware with ease.
Programming Cable for use:
Motorola GMKN1022 – serial Active Data Cable – programming cable, suitable for MTM700/MTM800
Following the radio pinout, it’s also possible to build a homemade cable.
Antenna Considerations
For the Motorola MTM800 radio, two types of antennas are applicable: mobile and base station antennas. When selecting an antenna, it’s important to match it to the radio’s operating frequency

Interfacing with Ham Radio Networks
Motorola MTM800 integrates with limitations into various HamTetra environments, demonstrating reliability in Direct Mode Operation (DMO), Trunked Mode Operation (TMO)
Note that Motorola MTM800 does not have a factory default “COR” pinout on the rear accessory connector. However, in 2020, an alternative COR pin was identified by YO6OSC. This pin is accessible under the GPS module connector and the information was published to aid SVXLink users.
Please note that we are not liable for any loss or damage incurred by you or your equipment during the undertaking.
Compatibility with Other Radio Manufacturers
The Motorola MTM800 interface with radios from other manufacturers, ensuring interoperability and compatibility across diverse communication systems.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Regular maintenance, including battery checks, firmware updates, and cleaning, ensures optimal performance and longevity of the MTM800. In the event of issues or malfunctions, troubleshooting procedures provided by Motorola or the HamRadio community can assist in diagnosing and resolving problems effectively.
Please note that the Motorola MTM800 has reached its end-of-life (EOL) status
