EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex

Introduction

The EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex is an advanced TETRA radio specifically designed for use in hazardous environments. Compared to the standard THR9 series, the THR9 Ex offers enhanced safety features such as ATEX/IECEx certification, making it suitable for explosive atmospheres. It maintains the robust communication capabilities of the THR9, including reliable connectivity and clear audio quality, while incorporating additional safeguards to ensure safe operation in potentially dangerous settings. This makes the THR9 Ex an ideal choice for industries like oil and gas, mining, and chemical manufacturing.

Models:

THR9 Ex comes in multiple HW variants:

Adaptation for Ham Radio Use

While originally designed for professional applications, the EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex can be repurposed for Ham radio use with appropriate programming and settings adjustments. However, it’s important to note that due to the limitations of its default frequency band, modification or expansion may not be feasible. Consequently, in certain countries, its use within Ham bands may be restricted, or it may only allow for a limited number of just 1-3 channels that fall within the permissible range

Programming

For programming the EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex, you would need a compatible programming cable. Airbus typically uses proprietary cables which connects the radio to a computer or programming device for data transfer.
Programming cable:

EADS Airbus Cassidian DLR-9U USB Data Cable
EADS Airbus Cassidian DAU-9M Serial Cable
EADS Airbus Cassidian CA-121 USB Cable

Programming the EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex for Ham radio use involves configuring the device to operate within amateur radio frequency bands and setting up desired channels and features according to Ham radio standards and preferences. You will need:

– ITSI Tool basic
Software to program ITSI features, meaning the individual identification number on the network
Requires a parallel port for the Dongle (protection key)
Connects through the Serial port of the computer, does not work with systems simulating Serial ports from USB ports.

– Tetra Programming Tool TPT Phoenix Operator Programmer
Software to program groups, personalise EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex profile and priorities.

– Firmware upgrade FPS-8 – FPS-10

– RC-4 band Clear Fw upgrade

All the sotwares requires a parallel port for the Dongle (protection key) DESkey PKD-1M.
All the Nokia/EADS/Cassidian/Airbus softwares are useless without the PKD-1M or PK-1M DES Key dongle.

Antenna Considerations

There is no other antenna to be used in ham bands

Device Pinout

Understanding the device pinout of the EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex is essential for ensuring proper connectivity and interfacing with external devices. This includes identifying ports for programming, audio accessories, and other peripherals. Additionally, this understanding aids in the creation of custom-made programming cables to suit specific requirements.

A custom made programming cable can be made using the following pinout:

Any decent 3.3V TTL adapter should work. Pins to be used : RX,TX, GND. MBUS for data transfer only.

Interfacing with Ham Radio Networks

The EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex can interface with Ham radio networks through programmed channels and frequencies allocated for amateur radio use. Device can be used in DMO and limited in TMO

Compatibility with other radio manufacturers
While primarily designed for Airbus radio networks, the EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex may offer limited compatibility with radios from other manufacturers

Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Regular maintenance, including battery checks, firmware updates, and cleaning, helps ensure optimal performance and longevity of the EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex. In case of issues or malfunctions, troubleshooting procedures provided by Airbus or Ham radio communities can help diagnose and resolve problems effectively.

Please note that the EADS Cassidian (Airbus) THR9Ex  has reached its end-of-life (EOL) status
