Build your own MTM5200/MTM5400/MTM800 FUG USB-SERIAL DATA CABLE

To build a MTM5200/MTM5400/MTM800FUG USB -Serial cable you’ll need the following follow the next steps:

1. Obtain the Rear Connector Set: Contact your Motorola supplier and acquire the PMLN5072A rear connector set.

2. Purchase the FTDI USB TTL Serial Cable:  Visit your preferred supplier and acquire the FTDI USB TTL Serial Cable TTL-232R-5V-WE.   You can find more information and purchase it from the FTDI website.

3. Ensure to install the Virtual COM Port (VCP) drivers from FTDI Drivers Page

4. Cable Configuration:  The TTL-232R-5V-WE is a USB to Serial (TTL level) converter cable with its I/O pins configured to operate at 5V levels. The cable comes with six bare, tinned wires: transmit (Tx), receive (Rx), RTS#, CTS#, Vcc (5V), and GND. Crimp contacts onto the following wires:At the FTDI cable you need crimp contacts to four wires:
– Black – Ground
– Yellow – RXD
– Orange – TXD
– Brown – CTS
Not used:
– Red – 5V from the USB connector
– Green – RTS
Cut to size and isolate with shrink tube.


– Pin 8 – Digital Ground – Black
– Pin 20 – RXD – Yellow
– Pin 22 – TXD – Orange
– Pin 24 – CTS – Brown

5. Insulation: Cut the wires to the appropriate length and insulate them with shrink tube.

6. Install VCP Driver: Install the VCP driver downloaded from the FTDI website

8. Secure the cable: Once you’ve confirmed that all connections are correct and functional, you can secure any loose wires and ensure the cable is properly assembled.

9. Final checks: Before using the cable for programming, perform a final visual inspection to ensure there are no exposed wires or solder joints.

Your MTM5400/MTM800 FUG USB/Serial data cable is now ready for use.

Note: This cable can be used  with Motorola Scout also.

Configuration for Scout Usage:  Ensure that the newly installed COM port is assigned a number between 1 and 16. You can check this in Windows Device Management (Start, Run…, devmgmt.msc). Adjust Scout software to recognize the assigned port and save the settings.
